Thouria, Messenia. AE Hemiobol or Hexachalkon (22 mm, 8.16 g), c. late 2nd to early 1st Century BC.
Obv. Head of Demeter right, wearing grain wreath.
Rev. ΘOY, Zeus Ithomatas striding right, hurling thunderbolt with right hand and with eagle perched on his left wrist; to right, grain-ear.
Grandjean Series II, pl. XXVI, 10; SNG Cop. 544 (same obverse die); BCD Peloponnesos 823 (this coin).

Extremely rare. Dark green patina. Nice very fine.

From the BCD and Mandas collections, ex LHS 96 (2006), 823. Privately purchased in April 1986 for 1500 CHF (!).

Thouria was a small city southeast of Messene. While it struck a considerable provincial issue in Severan time, its hellenistic coinage is uniformely extremely rare.
