eAuction #41, Lot 40. Estimate: CHF 75.00
Caracalla (197-217 AD). AE Assarion (19 mm, 4.72 g), Patrae, Peloponnesos. 214-215 AD. Obv. M AVR ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM, laureate head right. Rev. COL A A PATR, Artemis Laphria standing facing, looking right and leaning left on bow set on altar; to left, dog looking right. BCD Peloponnesos 577.2 (this coin).
About very fine.
From the BCD collection and ex LHS 96 (2006), 577.2.
Stylistically, these coins are so close to the Rome mint coinage that it seems most probable that the dies have been cut by engravers from Rome. A connection to Caracalla's journey to the east in 214-215 AD and the recruitment of "Spartan" hoplites on the Peloponnesos seems likely.
