Rare. FDC.
This beautiful medal was struck to commemorate the accession to the throne of Louis XV (1715-1774). Philippe II d'Orléans was appointed as regent of the 5-year-old prince and led state business until his death in 1723. He was a well-educated friend of the arts, but also quite lavish and extravagant, and as a declared atheist, he is said to frequently have read François Rabelais' satires during mass.
