eAuction #43, Lot 60. Estimate: CHF 150.00
Septimius Severus (193-211 AD). AR Denarius (17 mm, 2.54 g), Alexandria, 193. Obv. IMP CAE L SEP SEV PART AVG, laureate head right. Rev. FIDEI LEG TR P COS, Fides standing left, holding Victory and standard. RIC 349 (R); Bickford-Smith S. 55.
Rare. Very fine.
After Septimius' victory against Pescennius Niger in the battle of Nikaia, the prefect of Egypt switched sides and started issuing coins such as ours in the name of the apparent winner, assuring him the fidelity of the Egyptian troops.
