eAuction #43, Lot 17. Estimate: CHF 500.00
Stymphalos, Arcadia. AE Chalkous (14 mm, 1.82 g), c. 360s-350s BC. Obv. Head of Herakles right, wearing lionskin headdress. Rev. Σ-T, head and neck of a crested water-bird to right, emerging from the leaves of a water pantain with a fritillary on either side. MG 265 = Traité III 883, pl. CCXXIV, 21 (same dies, but noted as AR on the plate in error); BCD Peloponnesos 1699 (this coin).
Extremely rare. Very fine.
From the BCD collection, ex LHS 96 (2006), 1699.
While Stymphalos - the location of the sixth labor of Herakles - issued a number of silver coins (especially Obols), its bronze coinage is of an extreme rarity and among the hardest to find among all Peloponnesian minor coinages.
