eAuction #47, Lot 27. Estimate: CHF 500.00
Mantineia, Peloponnesos. AR Drachm (18 mm, 5.14 g), c. 330s-320s BC. Obv. Bearded and helmeted head of Lykaon right. Rev. MANTI, head of Kallisto right, her hair falling free. BMC 15 = Traité III, 965; Jameson 2513; BCD Peloponnesos 1479 (this coin).
Extremely rare, the first specimen to appear on the market since Jameson's in 1957. Beautifully toned. Attempted piercing on reverse, otherwise, very fine. A fascinating rarity showing both Kallisto and her father Lykaon.
From the BCD collection, acquired from S. Boutin in 1976; ex LHS 96 (2006), 1479.
