eAuction #45, Lot 161. Estimate: CHF 400.00
Revolt of the Heraclii (608-610 AD). AE half Follis (23 mm, 3.94 g), Alexandria. Dated IY 13 = 609. Obv. dMN ERACLIO CONSULII, facing busts of Heraclius, on left, and his father, the exarch Heraclius, on right, both bareheaded and wearing consular robes; cross above. Rev. Large K; cross above, date XIII across field; below, A. DOC 15; MIB 17; SB 724.
Rare and unusually complete. Very fine.
Struck during the uprising of the Heraclii. Residing in Carthage, they sent out an army in 609 to capture Egypt - which is where our coin was issued - while Heraclius the younger himself set sail to Constantinople the following year to overthrow Phocas.
