eAuction #45, Lot 62. Estimate: CHF 150.00

Caracalla (198-217 AD). AE Tetrasssarion (31 mm, 16.88 g), Pautalia, Thrace. 211-217.
Obv. AYT K M AYP ANTΩNINOC, laureate head to right.
Rev. ΦOΥΛIAC ΠAYTAΛIAC, Herakles standing to left, holding upright Club in left and Kantharos (!) in right hand, lion skin draped over his right arm.
Ruzicka 598.

Good very fine.

This is an interesting depiction of Herakles: other than his usual attributes - the lion skin and the club - he also holds a kantharos. This is most likely a tribute to the fertile lands surrounding the city.
