eAuction #87, Lot 42. Estimate: CHF 750.00

Celtic Gaul. Pictones. AV Stater (18-20 mm, 7.60 g), 2nd-1st century, 'à la main' type.
Obv. Celticized male head to right, with strings of pearls coming out of the hair.
Rev. Devolved charioteer, driving cart drawn by a centaur to right; to right, crescent; below, large human hand.
Cf. DT 3659; cf. LT 4395.

Apparently unrecorded. Very fine.

As already the cataloguers of CGB have noted, this coin bears some particular features. Contrary to the 'normal' staters of the Pictones, this specimen is made of finer gold and the weight is unusually high, so probably we have to deal with some sort of proto-type of the later Pictones coinage.
