eAuction #51 - Literature sale III, Los 144. Schätzpreis: CHF 15.00
Numismatic Fine Arts, Inc. New York, 2 December 1985.
Auction XVI. Ancient Coins. 611 lots, 60 plates, several of which depict
enlargements. Estimates sheet and prices realized list. Glossy bordeaux
illustrated card covers, rubbed with some bends at edges. Interior Very Good.
A note from BCD: One very clever fake has unfortunately crept in
amongst the many fine and rare Greek and Roman coins in this catalogue: lot 180
is now listed as a forgery in “Les monnaies d’argent de Syros” by Helene
Nicolet-Pierre and Michel Amandry in “Florilegium Numismaticum, Studia in
Honorem U. Westermark Edita”. It can be found on p. 304 as D (text) and h
(photo). Ironically enough, these “Syros” coins have recently been convincingly
re-attributed to Pergamon. See “The Closed Currency System of the Attalid Kingdom”
by Andrew Meadows in: Peter Thonemann, Editor, “Attalid Asia Minor”, pp.
184-186.
