eAuction #51 - Literature sale III, Lot 208. Estimate: CHF 15.00
Vinchon, Jean. Monte Carlo, 30 June 1978. Collections
de Monnaies. 499 lots, 2 colour plates plus illustrations throughout. Prices
realized list. Hardbound in white imitation leather with gilt letters and cover
illustration. Fine.
A note from BCD: According to Monsieur Vinchon’s introduction, the
majority of coins in this offering have been assembled more than three decades
prior to the date of the sale. Old collections have an aura of genuineness
about them and this is probably what caused the auctioneer to be unwary of at
least two forgeries: The dies of lot 60 are listed on p. 65 and illustrated
with fig. 6 in West’s “Fifth and Fourth Century Gold Coins from the Thracian
Coast” and lot 68 is a die duplicate of no. 24(a) in Kinns’ “The Caprara
Forgeries”. The remaining Greek and Roman coins are all choice and include
several important pieces. Some Byzantine, and other early Mediaeval gold adds
further interest to the catalogue and the French coinages are, as usual, amply
represented.
