eAuction #26, Lot 30. Estimate: CHF 1'500.00
Severus Alexander (222-235 AD). AE29 (14.43), Seleukeia ad Kalykadnos, Cilicia. Obv. AV K M AVP C Є OVHP AΛЄZA/NΔPOC, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right. Rev. СЄΛЄV/ KEΩN KAΛVKAΔNΩ, infant Zeus seated facing on throne, head left, raising right hand; around him, three Curetes, each wearing military outfit, striking shields with swords. SNG France 1004 (same dies), SNG Levante -; SNG Aulock -; cf. Triton XII (2009), 709 (1800 USD); Roma Numismatics 2013, 944 (1500 GBP).
Very rare, only the third to appear for sale in the past decade. Pleasant dark green Patina. Very fine / good very fine.
The Curetes were the protectors of the infant Zeus while he was hidden away on Crete. Their dancing and clashing swords on shields drowned out the cries of the little child, saving him from his murderous father Kronos.
