eAuction #45, Lot 106. Estimate: CHF 100.00

Hadrianus (117-138 AD). AR Denarius (18 mm, 3.34 g), Rome.
Obv. HADRIANVS AVGVST, laureate head to right, slight drapery at shoulder.
Rev. COS III, Libertas standing left, holding pileus and rod.
RIC -; Strack 142 (4 specimens).

Clear, good fine.

We have received a corrective note by Curtis Clay, according to whom this coin belongs to a rare Rome issue rather to an eastern mint:

Lot 106 is Rome not Eastern, Strack 142 (4 spec.). This was a rare variant obv. legend at the mint of Rome, not in Asia Minor, which was first properly noticed by Strack. The style of these coins in Roman, not Eastern; and the fact that there is a HADRIANVS – AVGVST aureus too, Strack 145 and Cohen 424, confirms the attribution to Rome. No aurei have so far been attested from Hadrian’s Asia Minor series of c. 130.
