eAuction #50, Lot 201. Estimate: CHF 5'000.00
Lucius Verus (161-169 AD). Aureus (20 mm, 7.19 g), Roma (Rome), 165-166. Obv. L VERVS AVG ARM PARTH MAX, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust to right, seen from behind. Rev. PAX AVG TR P VI COS II, Pax standing left, holding cornucopiae in left hand and olive-branch in right. Cohen 130. RIC 558.
A nice example with a beautiful portrait struck in high relief. Good very fine.
This issue was struck to commemorate the end of the Parthian campaign of Lucius Verus in 166. Under the command of the general Avidius Cassius, the Romans had successfully expelled Parthian troops from Armenia and had even captured the Parthian capital of Ktesiphon in 165. When Cassius invaded the Parthian homelands of Persia and Media in 166, the Parthian King Vologaeses IV sued for peace to which the Romans agreed. Lucius Verus returned to Rome and on 12 October 166 he celebrated a big triumph together with his co-emperor Marcus Aurelius.
