eAuction #11, Lot 22. Estimate: CHF 200.00
Krithote, Thrace. AE22 (6.32 g), c. 350-300 BC. Obv. Head of Demeter, hair in korymbos, facing slightly right. Rev. KPIΘO-ΣIΩN around barley grain; all within wreath. BMC 1; SNG Cop. 886 var. (head left).
Extremely rare. Beautiful dark green patina. Good fine.
Krithote was a small and unimportant town founded by Miltiades of Athens on the Thracian Chersonesos. Strabon reports that it lay in ruins in Roman time. The city minted only a few bronze coins in the second half of the 4th Century.
